Before leaving

Here is a list to help you remember a couple of things to do before you leave.

- Build your itinerary

- If you are covered by  public health insurances, make sure to know how long you are allowed to leave without losing your coverage. In Quebec, if you are away for 183 days or more, the  Régie de l'assurance maladie will stop covering you. Here are some informations about it.

-  Renew prescriptions for the whole length of your stay abroad and make sure you have enough of medicine like :
  • Benadryl
  • Pristine
  • Polysporin
  • Imodium
  • Gravol
  • Tylenol ou Acetaminophen
  • Malarone
  • Gastrolyte
  • Cipro

- Find somebody to fill your income taxes declarations

- Warn your insurance company (car, house, life, travel) that you are leaving.

- Warn the Society for the protection of the animals if your animals are registered, so they know the address where they'll be staying at.
- Leave a will? Yes or no?
- Authorize somebody (letter of proxy) to do some transactions in your bank account if you need it.
- Stock your electronic data with some software like DropBox.
- Photocopy important documents and leave a copy of those to someone you trust. Send an electronic copy to yourself and to that person. Can be very useful. (Think of passport, credit cards, debit cards, insurance numbers, driving license, vaccine proof)

- Have a second debit card in case the first one doesn't work.
(Some ATM's don't work really well if your card has a chip)
- Traveler's check and american money can be very helpful
- Read and get informed on the countries you want to visit.
- Plan to use some tools to save money, like a bus or a train pass. In some cases,
it is better to buy them before you  leave for the trip.

- Bring a lot of passport type pictures for visa requests or other needs.

Paperwork

- Renew the passport if necessary (are the usual 24 pages enough for all the
stamps and visas you need. Some countries ask for two blank pages to give a visa.)

- Get the visas you need before leaving if necessary

- Redirect your mail to somebody you trust

- Sign some blank checks for that person, in case he or she needs to pay
some bills for you.
- Get a good health insurance

- Get an international driver's licence

- Find out if some vaccines are manditory for the countries you want to visit
(Yellow fever, rabies)
